Week 7

Quantum computing

This week, I have been reading about quantum computing and its potential impact on encryption. Many tech professionals are both concerned and fascinated. What is quantum computing? Quantum computing is a technology that uses qubits instead of bits (0,1), and it is becoming more powerful because it can perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Although this technology is not new—having been established in the 1980s—scientists and tech companies continue to develop it. The main concept that raises concerns is something known as “superposition.” It allows quantum computers to perform many calculations at once, which is a significant advantage over traditional classical computers for solving complex problems.

This significant concern is cybersecurity because it can affect encryption. Most encryption and decryption systems use RSA and ECC, which involve mathematical problems like factoring and large prime factors. If a quantum computer can break these faster than traditional machines, it could put web browsers at risk.
